This young man is on the autism spectrum, with very limited verbal communication and his own unique ways of learning and engaging with the world.
At our specialist residential home, Mowbray House in Durham, conveniently close to his family and school, he is supported by a highly experienced team who understand how he communicates and notice the small ways he lets us know when something isn’t quite right.
Being close to home means spending meaningful time with his parents, keeping the routines that help him feel secure, and enjoying the comfort of familiar surroundings. This connection to family and his local community is central to his happiness and wellbeing.
With guidance from our Consultant Clinical Psychiatrist, the care is consistent, personalised, and nurturing. Over time, with the team’s gentle encouragement and consistent support, he has also begun to develop greater confidence and independence, making small choices for himself and taking part in everyday activities that give him moments of pride in his own achievements.
His parents say:
“He is happy, safe, loved and cared for as if he was at home, with the added benefit that everyone who cares for him genuinely has his best interests at heart.”
This story shows how the love of family, a dedicated care team, and the values of Young Foundations come together to help him feel truly at home.
At Young Foundations, we are committed to using our voice with them and for them, helping young people live happy, fulfilling, and increasingly independent lives.
