Education is the best way to help children and young people with additional needs to achieve positive and fulfilling futures. They need a teacher who believes in them as an individual with hopes and potential

  • Stepping Stones School offers a unique, warm, safe and caring educational environment for children and young people who may not thrive and achieve in an external setting at this point in their lives. We understand young people learn in very different ways, and a person centred approach enables success.

    Staff are passionate about making a difference and enabling them to reach their full potential. We understand how to personalise their learning and share in new experiences with them. We have clear pathways into more formal establishments, such as mainstream education, SEN schooling, college, employment, or work experience.

    Our individual, person-centred timetables will include core subjects, but the core curriculum is also embedded in holistic activities to enhance learning opportunities.

  • Every child and young person will have a 12 week assessment which will allow our teaching staff to gather information about their previous education achievements, assess their current needs and abilities, engage the young person in ownership of their potential and what is required of them to be successful and agree the best learning plan for them.


Education has always been difficult for me but Emma (the Teacher) never fails to bring a smile to my face. I have got what I wanted out of education while making a friend in Emma and getting a brand new spanking school as well!!

Governors – Stepping Stones School

Niall Kelly
Managing Director, Young Foundations

Niall is an experienced and qualified Managing Director of Children’s Services. He started his career in 1993 at a nationally renowned therapeutic community for children who have suffered trauma in the first three years of life. He lived and worked there for 13 years, spending 10 of those years as a Home Manager. From there, he joined a specialist company working with child sexual abuse as a Senior Manager and then Assistant Director, raising standards of delivery and outcomes beyond expectation of all stakeholders.

Niall qualified as MBA (Public Services) from Warwick Business School in 2011. He is currently studying for a PhD, with a research interest in leadership and management in children’s services, at the same university.

Niall joined Young Foundations as Managing Director in November, 2013.

Tom Ellison
Director of Operations, Young Foundations

Tom has been working with young people in the therapeutic residential care sector for more than 23 years. He has worked for voluntary and private organisations and for the past 10 years has held director roles, focusing on delivering specialist services to young people.

A psychology graduate and former practitioner, Tom has an MA in Psychoanalytic Observational Studies, a post-graduate Diploma in Management Studies and a Level 7 Award in Strategic Management. He joined the Young Foundations team in 2014.
